Who We Are
The CIY’s mission is to:
· Keep residents informed on important issues currently before the town
·
Increase the level of resident participation in town affairs
· Influence town policy through research, education and advocacy
To accomplish these goals, the CIY will carry out the following activities:
· Maintain a web site where information will be made available to the community.
· Establish an Observer Corps that will enlist volunteers to attend and monitor town meetings. Initially, the group will monitor the public and work sessions of the Town Board. As membership increases, plans are to have observers at the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals and possibly Yorktown and Lakeland School Board meetings, although the major focus of the group will be town affairs.
· Prepare written summaries of the significant issues raised at each meeting which will be uploaded to the web page and made available to “subscribers” via email. These will be factual summaries, not blog-like personal opinions or newspaper-like articles. The summaries are meant to supplement what is currently being reported in the North County News which, for business reasons, is limited in the amount of space it can devote to Yorktown coverage.
· Ask questions and make statements at public hearings and at appropriate board meetings on issues of importance to the town.
· Study issues of concern to the town and make appropriate recommendations to the town board.
· As appropriate, hold public meetings centering around the dissemination of information and/or discussion of controversial issues. The purpose of these meetings will be to educate residents and encourage them to provide feedback to town officials. |
